Hudson County Sheriff’s Office plans DWI checkpoint in Union City

The Hudson County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a DWI checkpoint Nov. 22 in Union City, Sheriff Frank Schillari announced.
The checkpoint, at 43rd Street and Kennedy Boulevard in Union City, is part of an ongoing campaign to promote safe driving and warn of the perils of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“The Hudson County Sheriff’s Office is committed to keeping the traveling public safe, which is why the primary purpose of this checkpoint is not to make arrests, but to deter drivers from driving impaired,” Schillari said.
“Impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may also interfere with someone’s ability to safely operate a vehicle.”
The sheriff’s office will have extra patrols throughout the county in an effort to curb driving while intoxicated, Schillari said, noting that his department is part of the county’s Vision Zero Task Force aimed at making roadways safer.
Aside from the common-sense tips of finding a ride, instead of driving, when under the influence, Schillari said motorists should contact law enforcement if they see an impaired driver on the road.
Also, if you are intoxicated and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member drive or escort you to your doorstep.
